Wisconsin’s Graying Population

Which is the grayest county in Wisconsin (as measured by percent of people 65 or older)?  Which county is the least gray?  The answers can be found on a map of Wisconsin created by Applied Population Lab (APL) at UW-Madison.

APL also recently created an animated chart that illustrates the changing age structure in Wisconsin from 1960-2020.  The age structure of a population varies over time but also across racial and ethnic groups. Check out the population pyramids for Ozaukee County for instance. These differences can have profound impacts on local communities, affecting the labor force, dependent populations, schools, migration, and more.

If you are unfamiliar with population pyramids and their interpretation, you can learn more with this fun pyramid primer from APL.P attributed to exports was 10.9% in 2024.
