Geocaching

Countywide Geocaching Project

What you can do in this project:

  • Learn the fundamentals of geocaching and equipment
  • Learn guidelines and rules of geocaching
  • Explore outdoors looking for geocaches
  • Build your own geocaches

Grades: 3-12

Cost: TBD.

Equipment Needed: Hand-held GPS unit or cell phone with Geocaching app installed. (We will discuss this at the new member meeting in November)

Project Add Deadline: TBA.

Location: Various Locations throughout Ozaukee County & local area beyond. Project leader will provide meeting locations.

2024-2025 Dates: (please RSVP to Jessica whether or not you plan to attend just prior to each meeting date.)

  • November 1, 2024, 5:00-6:00 pm., location: Frank L. Weyenberg Library lobby
    • New member orientation meeting. Optional for returning members as it will be a review for returning members.
    • Topics: How our project works, Using the geocaching website and app, Geocaching safety, What to wear and pack for geocaching, Common geocaching terms and acronyms, Fair projects
    • We will find a couple of easy geocaches within walking distance of library so you can see what geocaching is like.
  • December 8, 2024, 1:00-2:30 pm., Mequon Nature Preserve
    • Orienteering, map reading, compass usage, 4-stage Multicache, drop a travel bug to follow through the year.
  • December 27, 2024, 1:00-2:30 pm., Adventure Lab in Port Washington
    • Topic TBA.
  • January 23, 2025, 6:00-7:00 pm., Cedarburg Public Library
    • Education on how GPS works. Watch gadget cache videos. Plan our own gadget cache.
  • February 22, 2025, 4:30-6:00 pm., Jessica’s house
    • Building our gadget cache and writing a letter to ask permission for cache placement.
  • March 9, 2025, 1:00-2:30 pm., Harrington Beach State Park, Belgium
    • Finding Geocaches (there are around 40 here)
  • April 21, 2025, 1:00-2:30 pm. (Easter Monday- most schools have off this day), Newburg – along Hickory Rd/Shady Lane
    • Microcache Geotrail – 15 Geocaches here
    • Drive between caches for this experience. May have to conduct meeting in 2 time slots.
  • May 16, 2025, 6:00-7:00 pm., Lime Kiln Park, Grafton
    • 3 Geocaches here
  • June 8, 2025, 3:00-4:30 pm., Location TBA.
    • Finding Geocaches – Project members’ choice of where to go.

Record Books: Project youth should send photo of record book pages to project leader, Jessica, after county fair, and she will make comments and email back to youth. Youth can then print and put pages into record book before turning in to your general leader.
